INFORMATION
A tour of the western part of Zagreb goes through a gentle landscape of green hills and upon summits there are vineyards, small churches, and castles. Hrvatsko Zagorje boasts more than 50 castles, some of which have their own preserved parks. Wooden children’s toys are recognizable traditional products of Hrvatsko Zagorje with a long history and listed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. Trakošćan castle is sitting on a hilltop. It is a thirteenth century citadel, rebuild in a neo Gothic style in 1850s. Inside the castle is a museum and outside nice park with a lake. Seventy kilometres northeast of Zagreb, Varaždin is mainland Croatia’s best-preserved Habsburg-era town. The whole town is a typical example of Baroque architecture and therefore Varaždin is called the Baroque town.
